Bigos, or Hunter’s Stew, is a traditional Polish stew consisting of meat and cabbage. It’s another family favorite! This dish often has a few different meats in it. My Babci preferred to make it simple by using kielbasa and salt pork as the only meats. Sometimes the best foods are the simplest!
Bigos is so easy to make! Just render the salt pork, add the cabbage, kielbasa, tomato sauce, salt and pepper and simmer. After around 20 minutes, your meal is ready!
Another great thing about this dish is that it freezes well. If you have any left over, just freeze it in portions and you’ll have a delicious meal to look forward to in the future.

MY BABCI'S SIMPLE BIGOS
- 4 oz salt pork , finely diced
- 1 head cabbage , shredded
- 1 lb kielbasa , sliced then halved
- 2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
Render salt pork in a large soup pot.
Add cabbage and coat with rendered salt pork.
Add remaining ingredients.
Simmer until cabbage is soft and kielbasa is cooked through, approximately 20 minutes.
