Baklava is one of the simplest, yet most delicious desserts! The combination of nuts, sugar, vanilla and butter in fillo dough is second to none. Be sure to make baklava well in advance as it needs to cool completely and set for several hours before serving!

  • 1 package fillo sheets
  • 1 lb melted butter
  • 12 oz walnuts , ground
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9x13” baking pan.
  2. Grind nuts in food processor.
  3. In a large bowl, mix ground nuts with sugar and vanilla extract.
  4. Place one fillo sheet at bottom of baking pan. Brush with melted butter. (Keep plastic wrap over unused sheets to keep from drying out.)
  5. Place another fillo sheet on top of buttered fill sheet. Repeat until there are six laters of buttered fillo sheets.
  6. Spread 1/2 cup of nut mixture on top of fillo sheets.
  7. Place a fillo sheet on top of nut mixture. Brush with melted butter. Repeat until there are six layers of buttered fillo sheets.
  8. Again, spread 1/2 cup of nut mixture on top of fillo sheets.
  9. Repeat buttered fillo sheet and nut mixture layers until the pan is filled to the top. Make sure there are six layers of fillo sheets to one layer of nut mixture.
  10. Once the pan is full, cut the baklava lengthwise into 1/2 inch strips. Then, cut diagonally, again in 1/2 inch strips, so that the baklava is cut into diamond-shaped pieces in the pan.

  11. Bake at 350°F for 35-40 minutes.
  12. In the meantime, for the syrup, add 1 cup water to 2 cups sugar in a saucepan.
  13. Cook and stir over medium heat until syrupy.
  14. After removing baklava from oven, pour syrup over entire baklava.
  15. Cool completely and let set (several hours or even overnight) before serving.
